New Jersey Transit (NJT) has released a study of alternative transit modes for the Princeton Branch. Also, Pop-Up Metro is proposed to link Pennsylvania’s West Chester Borough to downtown Philadelphia; and Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has released a proposed budget for the next fiscal year.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), in partnership with Amtrak and with support from CSX, is seeking federal funding for corridor improvements to restore Inland Route intercity passenger rail service. Also, Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is extending the Discount GoPass Tap Card pilot program; and New Jersey Transit (NJT) is re-launching its Adopt-A-Station program.

As part of its Climate Action Plan, San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission has moved to the sole use of renewable diesel (R100) for its ACE locomotive fleet.

San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission has made the switch to 100% renewable diesel for locomotives operating in ACE (Altamont Corridor Express) commuter rail service in California. Also, New Jersey Transit (NJT) and Berkeley College have signed a three-year marketing agreement; and Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has released its 2023 budget and 2023-32 Capital Expenditures Program.

NJT Expands Heritage Fleet

New Jersey Transit has added a Heritage Locomotive to its revenue flee, EMD GP40PH-2 4101, one of the original CNJ (Central Railroad of New Jersey) GP40Ps that has operated in revenue service for more than 54 years.

Among the NJT Board’s recent actions was the approval of an approximately $6.08 million contract with Union Paving for the first construction phase of the Delco Lead Storage and Inspection Facility project.

NJT Advances Lackawanna Cutoff, Car Storage, Fare Upgrade Projects

The New Jersey Transit (NJT) Board of Directors on April 13 moved forward to restore passenger rail service along the Lackawanna Cutoff with the approval of a rock tunnel rehabilitation contract. In addition, it signed off on a railcar storage and inspection facility construction contract and on a fare card stock contract.

Portal North—part of the massive Gateway Program, which will eventually double rail capacity between Newark, N.J., and New York—will replace the 110-year-old Portal Bridge, a mechanical-trouble-plagued swing bridge built by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1910 as part of its New York Improvements project.

Portal North Builder Gets Official ‘Go’ From NJT

New Jersey Transit has issued a “Notice to Proceed” to Skanska/Traylor Bros PNB Joint Venture (STJV) for construction of Portal North Bridge, which is slated to take approximately five and a half years to complete.

“This critical help from Congress is the reason we were able to keep most of our service running for essential trips during the pandemic and all of our workers employed,” LACMTA CEO Stephanie N. Wiggins said.

CTDOT, LACMTA, NJT, NYMTA: $9.4B in Grants for COVID-19 Response

The Federal Transit Administration is awarding American Rescue Plan (ARP) Act of 2021 grants for COVID-19 response to the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT, $332.5 million); Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA, $1.24 billion); New Jersey Transit (NJT, $1.6 billion); and New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (NYMTA, $6.2 billion).
