GE seeks to acquire Alstom energy business, would leave Transport sector alone

General Electric, having given up on its efforts to acquire Ansaldo STS from Italian conglomerate Finmeccanica, is reportedly in negotiations with Alstom over a $13 billion takeover of the French company’s energy business, and is said to have the support of Alstom’s majority shareholder Bouygues, a French construction and engineering contractor, which holds a 29% stake. Alstom reportedly approached GE.

Locomotive backlog cited in GE 3Q earnings

A strong backlog of manufactured goods orders, including locomotives and jet engines, helped drive third-quarter earnings for Fairfield, Conn.-based General Electric Co., which reported financial results Friday, Oct. 18, 2013.

Experts weigh in on LNG

Programs to evaluate LNG (liquefied natural gas) as a locomotive fuel are expanding throughout the rail industry, led by such stakeholders as GE Transportation, Electro-Motive Diesel, BNSF, Union Pacific, CN, Clean Energy Fuels, Chart Industries, Westport Innovations, Waste Management, and many others. At the 2013 GE Transportation/Norfolk Southern Railroad Sustainability Symposium, a panel of industry experts talked about current LNG projects, and the potential of this relatively new alternative to diesel fuel.

GE Transportation marks good year

GE Transportation’s fourth-quarter results included $252 million in earnings, or “segment profits,” in the fourth quarter, up 11.5% from $226 million in the comparable 2011 quarter.
