Snowstorm stops MTA, Amtrak NYC services; Grand Central Terminal closed

New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority suspended all service as of noon local time Tuesday because of increasing winds and heavy snow accumulations, and advised commuters to stay home as a late winter storm swept through the Northeast.

The last trains were scheduled to arrive at Grand Central Terminal and other terminals at approximately noon ET, with service cancellations increasing as the storm conditions continued to worsen.

While New York City lifted its blizzard warning early Tuesday, snow, sleet, ice and high winds continued to make travel hazardous.

Late Tuesday morning Amtrak said it all Northeast Regional service between New York City and Boston was suspended until further notice.

“Getting customers to their destination safely is our top priority,” said Metro-North President Joseph Giulietti in a statement, adding that blowing winds and accumulating snow will make it increasingly hard to keep the third rail clear and power running smoothly for the entire day.

Long Island Rail Road operated a reduced morning service. Above-ground service on the subway was suspended as of 5 a.m.
