Norfolk Southern (NS), Union Pacific (UP) and Wabtec Corporation have earned spots on the 2023 America’s Greatest Workplaces for Women list, compiled by Newsweek and data firm Plant-A Insights Group.

The 600 companies included on the list “ranked the highest on criteria like ‘compensation and benefits’; ‘work-life balance’; and ‘proactive management of a diverse workforce,” according to Newsweek, which reported that selections were made based on a large employer survey and on a sample set of more than 37,000 women who work for U.S. companies that each employ at least 1,000 people. The survey collected, in total, more than 224,000 reviews of U.S. companies across all industry sectors.

According to Newsweek, evaluation and scoring were based on the following factors:

  • “Company familiarity: Participants were asked for either a direct recommendation for a company they work for or an indirect recommendation for companies they’ve known as an employer.
  • “Target group weighting: For women in leadership positions or single mothers.
  • “Driver category evaluation: Participants reviewed companies based on eight different categories.
  • “Desk research [supported by Onclusive and PrivCo]: Women ratio among the management team; if the company was women-founded or is women-led (bonus points would apply).
  • “Media monitoring: Finally, through an extensive review and evaluation phase, desk research was completed to validate facts about employers, legal disputes (within the past 24 months) and media monitoring was conducted, and a research jury validated the results.”

NS, UP and Wabtec were included with 15 other companies in the Logistics Services / Freight Transportation category, one of more than 25 represented in the list.
