Chemical products manufacturer and distributor SMC Global on May 9 reported acquiring property from Union Pacific (UP) to allow for future rail service to its Kansas City, Kans., production location.

The “half-mile stretch of railway” in the Fairfax District of Kansas City runs directly behind SMC Global’s facility at 2955 Chrysler Road, it said. UP told Railway Age that the property “was part of an industrial lead that is no longer in use.” (Scroll down for maps.) The sales price was not disclosed.

The acquisition is slated to help SMC Global serve U.S. producers and customers “who prefer rail service,” it said. The company added that it is now “evaluating various engineering firms to assess the railway’s capabilities and any property restrictions.”

“SMC is making significant investments in our U.S. infrastructure to enhance our ability to both ship and receive railcars,” commented Kevin Huber, Founder and COO of SMC Global, which has headquarters in New York City, as well as manufacturing, warehouse, and other facilities across the globe.

“Union Pacific looks forward to future opportunities and continued collaboration with SMC,” the Class I railroad told Railway Age
