Cando Rail & Terminals (Cando) on Dec. 13 reported acquiring its 12th multi-purpose terminal, Southwest Alberta-based Transmark, which adds capacity to its network and provides access to the Rocky Mountains, Western provinces and Pacific Northwest regions

The terminal is in the city of Lethbridge; it has a current capacity of 1,700 railcar spots and will offer daily services for railcar staging and storage, including unit train storage, as well as other services such as windmill transloading and railcar repair. All existing Transmark employees will be retained and “operations at the terminal will continue as normal,” according to Cando, which is described as a Brandon, Manitoba-based “provider of specialized rail operating services and terminal infrastructure that allow industrial shippers to optimize their supply chains and connect to Class I’s.” Cando also provides short line operations, industrial switching and material handling services.

The terminal, now called Cando Lethbridge Multi-Purpose Terminal, is located adjacent to Highway 4 and part of the CANAMEX Corridor, directly connecting to Interstate 15 in Montana, according to Cando. It is serviced daily by Canadian Pacific Kansas City.

With the acquisition, Cando’s 12-terminal network has the capacity to stage and store more than 10,000 railcars, the company reported. In June, Cando completed the expansion of its Sarnia terminal, which was purchased in 2021.

“Transmark was the perfect fit for Cando,” Cando President and CEO Brian Cornick said. “The company shares a commitment to customer service, safety, and providing innovative solution—the same values that have defined Cando since 1978. The terminal will allow us to expand our nation-wide logistics planning network, thereby enabling greater movement of Canada’s goods and resources in a key transportation corridor. The acquisition of our newest terminal in Southern Alberta is a defining moment for Cando Rail & Terminals. It signals a new era of growth for Cando. Strategic acquisitions such as this allow us to grow our terminal network across Canada and into the United States to better serve our clients.”

In related developments, Cando in November received a Safety Award from the Railway Association of Canada for its employee-driven “Good Catch Campaign”; in August announced its partnership with Caltrax, a division of CAD Railway Industries, to provide large industrial customers with railcar cleaning and repair on site at the Cando Sturgeon Terminal in Alberta; and in July reported developing a battery-electric switching locomotive through its Li-Ion (Lithium-Ion) 2025 Project, which will be customized for the company’s In Yard Operations (IYO) or closed loop switching operations.
