CN, CP, CSX, UP Named to S&P Global’s 2023 Sustainability YearbookWritten by Carolina Worrell, Senior Editor
Class I railroads CN, Canadian Pacific (CP), CSX and Union Pacific (UP) have been honored in this year’s Standard & Poors (S&P) Global Sustainability Yearbook under the Transportation and Transportation Infrastructure category.
CN has been named as one of the top 5% sustainability performers in the transportation industry with CP listed as an Industry Mover for the third time based on the company’s “leadership in environmental, social, governance and economic dimensions,” according to a Twitter post. CSX and UP have also been listed as Industry Movers.
According to S&P Global, The Sustainability Yearbook “aims to distinguish those companies within their industries that have each demonstrated strengths in corporate sustainability.”
The Sustainability Yearbook 2023 contains several key improvements, including:
- “Updated emblems to factually distinguish top performing companies.
- “A revised methodology with an exclusion screening process, to align the Yearbook’s methodology further with the approach taken to select companies into S&P Global ESG Indices.”
According to S&P Global, as of Dec. 16, 2022, more than 7,800 companies assessed for the 2022 Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) were also considered for inclusion in The Sustainability Yearbook 2023.
Distinctions were calculated against the top performing company in each Industry, and exclusions applied thereafter. This year, 708 top performing companies made it into the Yearbook.
“The rigor of our Corporate Sustainability Assessment, or CSA, is what makes identifying these companies possible,” said S&P Global President and CEO Douglas Peterson. “Over the past 24 years the CSA has grown into a leading corporate sustainability database. At the time of this writing, a record number of companies have participated in the latest CSA. The thousands of companies that submit data through the CSA help ensure that our sustainability scores are insightful and comprehensive. I want to express our gratitude to all the companies that take part in the CSA.”
