CN subsidiary CNTL, which handles first- and last-mile trucking container pickup and deliveries, has reached a second tentative agreement with owner-operators affiliated with Unifor, the Class I railroad reported May 7. The first tentative agreement, announced Jan. 17, was not ratified. This new four-year agreement covers approximately 750 owner-operators under contract with CNTL in Canada until Dec. 31, 2027. The group is represented by Unifor National Council 4000.

CNTL moves an average of 1.5 million containers per year between CN’s 23 intermodal terminals and customer locations.

Héctor Adrián García Montiel, CPKC’s Regional Mechanical Manager, has earned the Class I railroad’s CEO Award. CPKC made the announcement via social media, posting a video celebrating his accomplishments. “Héctor has led remarkable enhancements in our operations,” the railroad reported May 6. “With 14 years of dedication, his collaborative spirit has truly elevated our culture of excellence.”

José Ruperto, CPKC Mechanical Manager, North Zone, nominated García Montiel for the award. He did so because of the “freshness in his leadership and that desire to grow, that desire to learn, that eagerness to handle responsibility, that respect that his co-workers have for him even though he is a young person,” Ruperto explained in the video. García Montiel “has contributed to the fact that the zone is moving forward, the zone is doing well and delivering good results,” Ruperto noted.

Enrique Jimenez, Superintendent, South Zone, for CPKC, thanked García Montiel “for being the leader we need, for being the example he is giving us.” He said in the video that everything García Montiel “has done has given all the rest of us a guideline to realize that if you make an effort and really put your passion into what you are doing, you will be rewarded both professionally and personally. Hector has made a difference in our operation, he has given us that autonomy, that confidence that we did not have before.”

“Sometimes it’s very simple,” García Montiel concluded in the video. “It’s just saying, ‘Hello,’ patting them on the back, and telling them, ‘How are you today?’ Everything I have done is paying off. I am walking, I have not [gotten] stuck, and step by step, I am achieving what I set out to do one day.”
