Canada FY2023 Budget: $262MM for Rail

Among the proposals included in the Canadian government’s 2023 budget, tabled March 28 by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland, are those slated to “strengthen Canada’s transportation systems and supply chain infrastructure,” such as the establishment of a Transportation Supply Chain Office and a temporary extension, on a pilot basis, of the interswitching limit in the prairie provinces “to strengthen rail competition.” Also proposed: investing C$210.0 million over five years in VIA Rail Canada.

The Railway Association of Canada (RAC) has published the 30th edition of its Rail Trends report, providing a ten-year performance overview (2012-2021) of its member passenger and freight railroads.

RAC Releases Locomotive Emissions Monitoring Report

The Railway Association of Canada (RAC) on Nov. 3 released its Locomotive Emissions Monitoring (LEM) report, which found that “pioneering investments by Canadian railways in fleet renewal, fuel-saving technologies, employee training and low-carbon fuels are driving emissions reductions in the rail sector.”

Govt. of Canada, Canadian Rail Industry to Provide Rail Assistance to Ukraine

Minister of Transport Omar Alghabra on Sept. 28 met with the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine, the Ambassador of Ukraine and officials from the Railway Association of Canada (RAC) during the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) 41st Assembly to “identify areas of collaborative rail assistance to Ukraine.”
