As the U.S.-Mexico-Canadian trade agreement (USMCA) officially becomes the governing statute for commerce across North America, Marc Brazeau, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Railway Association of Canada (RAC), Iker de Luisa Plazas, Director General of Asociacion Mexicana de Ferrocarriles (AMF) and Ian Jefferies, President and CEO of the Association of American Railroads (AAR) issued the following statement:

Murray Becomes First Female RAC Board Chair

The Board of Directors of the Railway Association of Canada (RAC) has elected Fiona Murray, VP of Public and Government Affairs at CN, as Chairperson. She is the first female Board Chair in the RAC’s 103-year history.

North American Railroads Call for USMCA Ratification

Ian Jefferies, President and CEO of the Association of American Railroads, joined with Marc Brazeau, President and CEO of the Railway Association of Canada (RAC), and Iker de Luisa Plazas, Director General, Asociación Mexicana de Ferrocarriles (AMF), in calling for quick ratification of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

CP to appeal TC Ministerial Order

Canadian Pacific announced that it is appealing Transport Canada’s Feb. 8 Ministerial Order to address the securement of trains on mountain grades after a train is stopped by an emergency brake application.

Canada revises tank car phase-outs

Transport Canada on Sept. 19 issued Protective Direction 39, which accelerates phase-out of non-jacketed (no thermal layer of protection) CPC-1232 tank cars for crude oil service as of Nov. 1, 2018, 17 months earlier than originally mandated. In addition, non-jacketed CPC-1232 and older DOT-111 tank cars will be prohibited from transporting condensates as of Jan. 1, 2019, more than six years ahead of schedule.

RAC 2018 Safety Award winners

The Railway Association of Canada (RAC) on Aug. 8 announced the winners of its annual Safety Awards, which recognize RAC member-companies’ initiatives “that help to ensure our country’s rail network remains among the safest in the world.” Canadian Pacific, VIA Rail, Cando Rail Services and Genesee & Wyoming received awards for their “outstanding safety leadership” in 2018. Winners will receive their awards at an RAC ceremony in November.

Brazeau to head RAC

The Railway Association of Canada (RAC) on June 11 appointed Marc Brazeau President and Chief Executive Officer, effective July 3, 2018. Brazeau succeeds Michael Bourque, President and CEO from April 2012 to November 2017. Gérald Gauthier has been running RAC in the interim.

RAC: Short lines need dedicated funding

The Railway Association of Canada (RAC) is calling on the government of Canada and its provinces to support programs that provide shortline railroads with dedicated funding for infrastructure investment.

Stage set for RSI/CMA 2014, Canadian Rail Summit

Conference registration and hotel reservations have begun for RSI/CMA 2014, the Railway Supply Institute’s (RSI) annual trade show and conference, to be held in conjunction with the Railway Association of Canada’s (RAC) Canadian Rail Summit. The events take place Sept. 21-23, 2014, at the Palais des congrès de Montréal (Montréal Convention Center) in Montréal.

Exhibit space sales to open for RSI/CMA 2014

Exhibit space sales for RSI/CMA 2014, the Railway Supply Institute’s annual trade show, will begin Monday, March 17, 2014. Sponsorship sales for both RSI/CMA and Canadian Rail Summit 2014, hosted by the Railway Association of Canada, will also open March 17.
