Cando Rail & Terminals Eyes Sturgeon, Alberta Extension Project
Written by Marybeth Luczak, Executive EditorBrandon, Manitoba-based Cando Rail & Terminals is proposing to essentially double the size of its Sturgeon terminal, which opened for business in 2020 in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, directly west of CN’s Beamer Spur.
The project would expand by approximately 321 acres the current terminal, which is located about 14 miles northwest of Edmonton in Sturgeon County, and would operate for at least 50 years as a full-service and multi-purpose facility used to store, sort, maintain and transload railcars, according to the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada, which on March 5 invited Indigenous Peoples and the public to review the summary of the Initial Project Description (download below) and provide comments on the proposal. This feedback, the agency said, will help it prepare a summary of issues that will be given to Cando Rail & Terminals. Comments are due on April 4, 2024.
The agency will also hold virtual information sessions on the project and the impact assessment process on March 19 and March 21, 2024.
Cando Rail & Terminals’ application was submitted by Clifton Engineering Group Inc., to conform with the requirements of an Initial Project Description (IPD) under the Government of Canada’s Impact Assessment Act, 2019. This application is presented to the Canadian Impact Assessment Agency (IAAC) under the Impact Assessment Act in support of the expansion of Cando’s existing rail terminal, which was previously approved in 2019 under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 (CEAA).
