NCDOT: $6M for short line projects
Written by Railway Age StaffThe North Carolina Department of Transportation handed out nearly $6 million in grants for 12 projects aimed at short line freight service and grade crossing safety.
The funding through the Short Line Infrastructure Assistance Program (SIAP) is a component of the Freight Rail and Rail Crossing Safety Improvement Program established in 2013 by the General Assembly. The North Carolina Railroad Company also contributed and each approved project was funded based on the needs of the railroad, plus the impact of the proposed improvement.

• Demolish and repair West lead track • Replace switch
Aberdeen Carolina & Western Railway
• Upgrades to four bridges • Upgrade switches • Rail replacement and upgrade switch • Facility improvements
Blue Ridge Southern Railroad
• Upgrades to five bridges
Piedmont and Northern Railway
• Construction of transload facility in Belmont
Carolina Coastal Railway
• Upgrades to seven bridges along NS and BH line
• Rail replacement, cross ties and surfacing
Aberdeen and Rockfish Railroad
• Rail replacement
Yadkin Valley Railroad
• Rail replacement • Cross tie replacements
Great Smoky Mountain Railroad
• Rail replacement • Cross tie replacement • Return track to service
Port of Wilmington
• Rebuild intermodal Track 18 • Rebuild intermodal Track 1
Atlantic & Western Railway, LP
• Upgrade four turnouts at Sanford Yard
Alexander Railroad
• Upgrade of Statesville Yard track and switches
