Claudette Biemeret, the current Assistant Inspector General of Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), has been appointed to a four-year term as Inspector General, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced May 2.

Biemeret, who has been Assistant Inspector General at BART since 2020, also served as Audit Manager for the City of Berkeley from 2014 to 2020 and as an Auditor there from 2008 to 2014. She was an Auditor at Maze & Associates from 2006 to 2008 and Account Executive at Maguire/Maguire from 1997 to 2006. She is Board President of the Association of Inspectors General, Western States Chapter. She is also a member of the Association of Local Government Auditors, the Institute of Internal Auditors and the Institute for Public Procurement. Biemeret earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Golden Gate University and is a Certified Inspector General. This position, according to the Governor’s office, does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $220,000.

According to BART, the Inspector General, a position that was created when Bay Area voters approved Regional Measure 3 in June 2018, “plans, directs, and manages the independent oversight of all District activities and operations to ensure the effective use of resources and compliance with applicable federal and state laws.” The Inspector General, the agency adds, is “empowered to conduct independent audits and investigations and to provide reports of findings to BART’s Board of Directors, the California State Legislature, and the public.”

The Board interviewed candidates earlier this year and submitted three names to the Governor for consideration.

“We, at BART, are grateful to the Governor for filling this vital position with a highly qualified professional so quickly,” said BART General Manager Bob Powers. “The Inspector General plays a very important role in maintaining the integrity of government through preventing and detecting fraud, waste, and abuse.”

“The BART Board looks forward to a constructive and cooperative relationship with the incoming Inspector General,” said BART Board President Janice Li. “The Inspector General is crucial to ensuring that BART meets the highest standards of accountability, efficiency, and transparency.”

“We look forward to Ms. Biemeret assuming the responsibilities of Inspector General,” added BART Board Director Bevan Dufty. “It is essential that we have independent oversight to help improve BART’s operations and ensure the effective use of public funds.”
