Ocean Network Express Pte. Ltd. (ONE) has selected Port Everglades, served by Florida East Coast Railway, for its new FLX (Florida Latin Express) service connecting South Florida to Honduras, Colombia and the west coast of South America.

ONE, headquartered in Singapore and established by a merger of Japan’s three largest ocean carriers—MOL, NYK and K Line—operates a global fleet of more than 250 container ships and actively participates in all major global trade lanes.

Its FLX service will employ Port Everglades’ Florida International Terminal (FIT) “for its first foray into the North-South trade lanes,” according to the Port. The service is expected to launch this month, linking the Port to Callao and Paita (Peru) and Guayaquil (Ecuador). It will carry refrigerated fruits, vegetables and seafood from the farms of South America.

Port Everglades handles an average of one million TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units) annually and has direct access to the interstate highway system. According to the Port, Florida East Coast’s near-dock, 43-acre Intermodal Container Transfer Facility connects cargo with 70% of the U.S. population within 72 hours. The 351-mile regional is the exclusive rail provider for Port Everglades, PortMiami and Port of Palm Beach, Fla.

“Port Everglades provides the competitive edge that shipping lines like ONE need and expect,” said Jonathan Daniels, CEO and Port Director of Port Everglades. “With our prominence in the perishables market and efficient terminal operators such as FIT, we are the natural port of choice to serve as the South Florida home for the FLX service.”
