CP, CSX Recognized as ‘Sustainability Leaders’

Canadian Pacific (CP) and CSX have been added to the 2021 Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) North America.

This marks CP’s second consecutive year on the list, and CSX’s 11th.

DJSI North America comprises S&P Global-identified “sustainability leaders” that represent the top 20% of the largest 600 North American companies in the S&P Global Broad Market Index (BMI) based on long-term economic, environmental and social criteria.

“We are proud that DJSI is recognizing CP’s commitment to being a sustainability leader in the transportation sector,” CP President and CEO Keith Creel said. “We continually look for innovative, impactful ways to advance our objectives and to embed sustainability in all levels of our organization.”

CP in October published its 2020 corporate sustainability report on the company’s “successes and achievements on its journey to being sustainably driven.” The report “provides an overview of CP’s continued progress in three sustainability areas of focus: operating safety, maintaining operational excellence throughout the network, and managing the social impact of CP’s work.” In addition, Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) recently awarded the Class I railroad’s Hydrogen Locomotive Program a $15 million 50% matching grant to expand the initiative to three locomotives, install hydrogen production facilities at two locations, and create a “global center of excellence in hydrogen and freight rail systems” in Alberta.

“We are extremely pleased the DJSI continues to recognize CSX as an industry leader in sustainability,” CSX President and CEO James M. Foote said. “We remain focused on building upon this success to further expand the sustainability benefits CSX offers to our customers, employees and other stakeholders. Our efforts have improved upon the emissions advantage rail provides as the most fuel-efficient mode of land-based transportation. We continue taking action to further reduce emissions for the freight already moving on CSX and are committed to driving additional reductions through converting incremental volumes off the highway and onto CSX.”

CSX in July released its environmental, social and governance (ESG) report for 2020, covering sustainability performance in the areas of safety, people and communities, environment, and governance. Also, the Class I railroad was recently recognized with a 2021 Climate Leadership Award by the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES) and The Climate Registry.
