Atlanta's Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority said Monday it expected to award URS Energy and Construction a contract to design and build the 2.6-mile Atlanta Streetcar Project.

MARTA will operate the 12-station line which will serve CNN Center, the Georgia Aquarium, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, among other locations, also connecting with MARTA rapid rail and bus services.

Siemens S70 streetcars (depicted above) will be used for the service, which aims to generate residential and commercial activity along the route.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood was on hand Feb. 1 for the ceremonial launch of the $94.4 million project, returning streetcars to Georgia’s state capital for the first time since 1949. Revenue service is targeted to begin in 2013.
