Canada to Create Separate Railway for Corridor HFR (Updated November 11)

Transport Canada confirmed Oct. 31 that state corporation VIA Rail Canada has been shunted aside from its own project to construct and operate an electrified “High Frequency Rail” (HFR) service along the Corridor linking Quebec City, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto—the only profitable route VIA currently covers.

Transit Briefs: Metrolinx, TransLink, VRE, WMATA

Metrolinx has awarded Toronto’s Union Station Enhancement Project to ONTrack Alliance. In addition, Metro Vancouver’s Transport 2050 plan is now final; the $5 million rehabilitation of Virginia Railway Express’ (VRE) Fredericksburg station is expected to begin this summer; and Washington Area Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA) has earned a Transportation Security Administration award.

Toronto: USRP Complete, USEP Under Way

After ten years and C$824 million, Toronto’s Union Station Revitalization Project (USRP) is complete, including the historic facility’s main passenger area, Bay Concourse, which was completely remodeled and expanded. Next up: Union Station Enhancement Project (USEP), which will improve the train platform space.
