Tier 4, ‘All Notches, All the Time’

Fullerton, Calif.-based technology company Rail Propulsion Systems LLC (RPS), partnering with the North Carolina DOT, the North Carolina State Clean Tech Center and the Federal Highway Administration, has demonstrated what it’s describing as “the first diesel passenger locomotive in the United States with combined in-use emissions lower than the current EPA Tier 4 standard.”

Agent 999: RPS Restores Zero-Emission Locomotive

Rail Propulsions Systems, LLC, (RPS) of Fullerton, Calif., has successfully restored and recycled locomotive 999, an early zero-emission battery prototype which was developed by NS more than 10 years ago to be a road switcher but did not meet the requirements and the project was abandoned.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has awarded Fullerton, Calif.-based Rail Propulsion Systems (RPS) a contract for a second Blended After Treatment System (BATS) to retrofit its fleet of EMD F59PH diesel-electric passenger locomotives.
