STV, Michael Baker Land CSX Tunnel Contract

CSX Transportation has awarded a joint venture of STV and Michael Baker International a program and construction management services contract for its $466 million Howard Street Tunnel Clearance Program.

CSX Wants Pan-Am. NS Says ‘Not So Fast’

Shades of the battle between CSX and Norfolk Southern that occurred some 25 years ago over Conrail, but on a smaller scale: CSX is in negotiations to acquire Pan Am Railways, the 1,700-mile Class II previously known as the Guilford Rail System, itself the amalgamation of the Boston & Maine, Maine Central, Portland Terminal Company and Springfield Terminal Railway. NS, in a Nov. 6 filing with the Surface Transportation Board, is opposing the transaction.

Steady as She Goes

RAILWAY AGE, NOVEMBER 2020 ISSUE: Cindy Sanborn, a seasoned railroader who Norfolk Southern Chairman, President and CEO Jim Squires described as “one of the freight rail industry’s leading operations experts,” became the railroad’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer on Sept. 1, 2020. Mike Wheeler, Sanborn’s predecessor, retired on Oct. 1, 2020, after a 35-year career at the railroad.

Alvin “Pete” Carpenter, 1942-2019

Alvin “Pete” Carpenter, who worked his way up from railroad brakeman to President and CEO of CSX Transportation, died Aug. 20 following a battle with cancer. He was 77.

As many of you may know, I’m a motorsports fan. I’m pretty happy today, because the driver from my home state of New Jersey who I have been following since he entered NASCAR’s top-tier Cup series a few years ago, Martin Truex Jr., won his first championship in an exciting race at Homestead Miami Speedway on Nov. 19.
