Funds spur Providence, R.I., streetcar plan

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority has formally approved plans for a $126.7 million Providence streetcar system, including a financing mechanism for the project, and authorized a preliminary 2.5-mile route still subject to adjustment.

Joint venture awarded Tucson streetcar contract

Granite Construction Inc. announced late Thursday that it and RailWorks Track Systems have been awarded a a $56 million contract by Tucson, Ariz., to build the city’s 3.9-mile streetcar project. The two companies have formed a joint venture, Old Pueblo Trackworks, to perform the work.

Pittburgh’s light rail transit system officially added 1.2 route miles Sunday for revenue service, as the North Shore Connector began operations linking its namesake neighborhood with the city’s downtown.

Valley Metro awards LRT extension contract

Phoenix’s Valley Metro on Thursday selected Valley Transit Constructors (VTC), a joint venture, for the design and construction of the $200 million, 3.1-mile Central Mesa light rail extension into the namesake Arizona municipality. Parsons Transportation Group, part of the joint venture, will serve as lead designer. The agency’s board of directors voted unanimously to accept the $111 million bid.

Virginia Beach mayor: Hold LRT referendum

Virginia Beach, Va. Mayor Will Sessoms on Wednesday called for a referendum this November to gauge public support for extension of The Tide LRT from neighboring Norfolk. Sessoms made his preference know n during his State of the City address.
