Granite Construction Inc. announced late Thursday that it and RailWorks Track Systems have been awarded a a $56 million contract by Tucson, Ariz., to build the city's 3.9-mile streetcar project. The two companies have formed a joint venture, Old Pueblo Trackworks, to perform the work.

Granite Construction calls the project “the first federally funded streetcar project in more than 60 years.” Granite will book its share, approximately $29 million, into backlog during the first quarter of 2012, the company said.

The project includes concrete streetcar guideways, 22 covered stops for accessibility, and reconstruction of existing roadways, including the modification and replacement of water systems and other associated utility improvements.

Work is under way and is expected to be completed by summer 2013, the company said.

Tucson has seven streetcars on order from Clackamas, Ore.-based United Streetcar, a subsidiary of Oregon Iron Works. OIW launched United Streetcar in 2005.
