Oak Cliff streetcar may need DART funding

The Dallas City Council may ask Dallas Area Rapid Transit to contribute roughly $20 million to the proposed $37 million Oak Cliff streetcar project, linking Union Station and Methodist Hospital.

DART, while supportive of the streetcar initiative, driven in large measure by Oak Cliff neighborhood activists, has no money set aside for the project. It does have funding to build a people mover system linking Love Field, the city’s “other” airport, with DART’s Green Line.

The streetcar line received a $23 million federal TIGER funding grant in February 2010, which must be used by 2013 or else forfeited. The city also must show it can support operations with local or other identifiable sources. About $12 million in regional toll revenue has been identified for capital construction.
