Torque ’em down right with Norbar

Ethanol tank car manway cover pivoting eyebolts must be tightened with precise torque. Not enough torque, and there is risk of leakage. Too much torque, and emergency responders to a derailment will be unable to quickly knock the bolts loose with an axe to relieve interior pressure, as explained to Railway Age by Norbar Torque Tools Inc. National Sales Manager Sam Ortolani at Railway Interchange 2015 (Booth 3811, RSI).

Norbar’s Manway Cover Torque Tool offers “fast, accurate, secure and controlled bolting,” according to Ortolini (pictured, at left, with his son, Dominic). “This is a non-impacting tool, so it’s safe for operators and hardware. It includes spark-resistant hardware, and is powered by standard shop air. It’s a field-proven solution to over-torque problems, as it consistently provides the proper amount of torque.”

NorbarAmong the other industrial torque tools in Norbar’s product line on display at Railway Interchange 2015 are the Verification Fixture, which provides “fast and easy verification of continual-rotation torque tools. These come in ranges up to 1,500 foot-pounds and are accurate to with 1% of reading. Equipped with an easy-to-read four-digit LED display, it’s ideal for daily or weekly verification, and can be used to verify clicker- and dial-style torque wrenches. A built-in rundown assembly simulates bolted joints.”

Norbar’s Controlled Torque + Angle Bolting System measures torque or torque and angle continuously, “with no need to stop and switch. Accurate and repeatable to within 1 degree, it allows up to 12 preset torque targets. Password protected to prevent tampering, it’s ergonomic, lightweight, and quiet. Purpose-built reactions are available.”

Norbar industrial torqueing tools have been used throughout the railroad industry for many years, in many applications.
