San Diego County’s North County Transit District in California has awarded a $32 million contract to Herzog Technologies, Inc. to install Positive Train Control (PTC) for use by NCTD Coaster trains.

Said NCTD PTC Program Director Jay Walser, “This agreement will allow NCTD to meet the Federal Rail Administration (FRA) mandated timeline to implement the system by 2015.”

NCTD said its PTC system will fully integrate with other PTC systems that will be installed on adjacent rail lines, such as Metrolink, BNSF Railway, Amtrak, and Pacific Sun to ensure smooth interoperability along the coastal rail line.

Congress in 2008 mandated the installation of PTC for virtually all passenger rail service operations along with vast portions of the U.S. freight rail network, following an accident Sept. 12, 2008 in Chatsworth, Calif., where a Metrolink passenger train ran a red signal, colliding with a Union Pacific freight train, killing 25 people.
