Written by William C. Vantuono, Editor-in-Chief

Ansaldo STS (formerly known as Union Switch & Signal) has published Safety On The Rails: The Union Switch & Signal Story, a retrospective book that commemorates Union Switch & Signal’s 130th anniversary.

ansaldo_130_logo_final.jpg“Inventor George Westinghouse founded Union Switch & Signal (US&S) in 1881,” the company said in an announcement about the book’s availability. “The book details the inspiring story of railroading history and the company’s humble beginnings in Pennsylvania, under the leadership of Westinghouse. The story follows the company through its failures and successes as it weathered the storms of economic depressions, wars, and the challenges of technological advancements.

Ansaldo STS commissioned Joanne L. Harris, president of Harris Marketing Communications in West Palm Beach, Fla., to write the book, and to chronicle the technological innovations that Union Switch & Signal developed, as well as the men and women “whose relentless work ethic and innovative insight set the stage for such an enriching story.” The company’s employees are highlighted as the foundation of both its past and future success as one of Pittsburgh’s oldest and most historic companies.
