PATH curtails weekend service to speed repairs

Written by Douglas John Bowen

PATH bistate rail service will be limited to just one line, the system's Newark-to-World Trade Center route, this weekend and next to aid system repairs on other parts of the system still out of service due to Hurricane Sandy more than five weeks.

PATH’s parent, the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, says the move is designed to give crews 48 hours of uninterrupted time to work on the restoration of the system’s Hoboken Station and nearby right-of-way.

Weekend service will see trains operate only from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. between the World Trade Center, in downtown Manhattan, and Newark. Port Authority officials hope the move will expedite restoration of Hoboken PATH service by five days or more.

Service generally is expected to resume sometime in January, though PATH has been reluctant to identify a target date.
