NJT: Power restored for Hoboken services

New Jersey Transit Tuesday said its electric-powered rail service to and from Hoboken Terminal would resume Sunday, March 24, complemented by changes in schedules to reflect the resumption. Restoration of a key power substation, affected by Hurricane Sandy last October 29, has been completed.

“This marks significant progress in post-Sandy recovery,” said NJT Executive Director James Weinstein. “Starting March 24, we will be adding 21 additional trains to the current schedules, which will restore nearly all rush hour service to Hoboken and result in the long-awaited return of standard one-seat service to Hoboken for Gladstone customers.”

Trains, including diesel-powered consists, will be added to the Morris & Essex, Montclair-Boonton, and Main/Bergen County lines. In addition, NJ TRANSIT will restore 19 trains that have been operating “partial-length” trips to their complete trips.

NJT said the restored service will bring rail operations to 97% of its pre-Sandy service level, with 679 of the 700 weekday trains scheduled prior to the storm in service.

Many NJT’s Hoboken Division train riders use Hoboken Terminal for transfers to PATH or ferry services linking lower Manhattan. Hoboken Terminal is also served by local buses and Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Transit.
