Savage, the Utah-based global infrastructure and supply chain services company, is growing its intermodal rail terminal operations in Pocatello, Idaho, with the acquisition of the nearby Idaho Rail Shop business and property.

Savage in 2021 opened Idaho’s first and only intermodal rail terminal, Savage Railport-Southern Idaho. Located at Union Pacific’s (UP) rail yard in Pocatello, it provides Southern Idaho and Northern Utah agriculture producers “with closer access to rail so they can ship containerized products to Northwest seaports and connect to global markets more efficiently and cost-effectively,” the company reported Feb. 20.

Idaho Rail Shop, which was established in 1997, provides railcar repair services. Positioned near Savage Railport-Southern Idaho, it will soon offer transloading of dry- and liquid-bulk commodities and dimensional freight, according to Savage. Like the existing intermodal railport, the new transload terminal will connect with UP.

“We’re excited to grow our operations in Pocatello by adding railcar repair capabilities and developing a new multi-commodity transload terminal,” said Jason Ray, President of Savage’s Infrastructure Sector. “This will strengthen the growing Savage Transload Network of rail terminals across North America, and provide a more efficient supply chain for moving products and materials through Southern Idaho and the region. We’re also pleased to welcome seven new team members to Savage.”

The Savage Transload Network operates more than 50 transload facilities in North America (download PDF below for more details).

In a related development, Savage in 2023 joined the Cyclyx 10 to 90® program to help reduce plastic waste.
