Union Pacific (UP) is honoring 137 customers with Pinnacle Awards for safely shipping hazardous materials (hazmat) in 2023.

The annual award is presented to companies that implement release prevention protocols, corrective action plans and have zero non-accident releases of regulated hazmat shipments, according to UP. The number of recipients for 2023 is said to be the highest the railroad has recognized in more than a decade. In 2022, 95 companies earned awards and in 2021, 70 companies received them and 70 companies in 2021.

“Safety is Union Pacific’s No. 1 priority, and we are proud to honor these likeminded companies with the 2023 Pinnacle Award,” UP Senior Vice President–Industrial, Marketing and Sales Jacque Bendon said during the April 30 announcement. “Our customers share our commitment to the safe transportation of chemicals, and we have a collaborative goal of protecting the environment and communities along our rail network.”

UP reported that it supports customers with joint rail safety training programs and railcar inspections, and has regional teams across its network with a four-prong mission: “Prevention, Preparedness, Response and Recovery.”
