Greenbrier Cos. announces layoffs

Greenbrier Cos. says it will reduce its work force by roughly 150, in an effort to rein in costs during the current economic recession.

The job eliminations will involve both layoffs and early retirement packages, mostly at its Gunderson and Concarril new railcar facilities and various Greenbrier Rail Services railcar repair and refurbishment shop locations. Some job cuts at the company’s Lake Oswego, Ore., headquarters also will occur.

The company hopes to generate $16 million in savings for the year through such action.
