The February 2024 issue of Railway Age is now available digitally, covering the freight rail policy outlook and showcasing our 25 Under 40 “Fast Tracker” honorees.

Railway Age’s “Fast Trackers” awards program, established in 2016, recognizes the top 25 railroaders under the age of 40, who are making an impact in their respective fields or companies.

This year’s honorees were selected from North American freight and passenger railroads; government entities; and supplier, contractor and consultant communities. They were judged on criteria that included industry experience and education, leadership skills, industry contributions, and community service involvement.

“The field was strong, which bodes well for the future,” said Michigan State Center for Railway & Education Director Nick Little, who was program judge. “This year, there was a noticeable reduction in IT people as these skills clearly become assimilated into the more traditional roles. Many nominees talked about internal and external cooperation and cross-functional leadership qualities. I continue to be amazed by the contributions these young people have made in their careers alongside maintaining quality of life. Ten of the 25 are female, which says a lot about the quality of women in rail today. The range of backgrounds and skills range from locomotive engineer to civil engineer and from project leader to operations manager, and everything in between.”

Inside the February 2024 issue, you’ll also find feature stories on:

  • Swirling Policy Current: Railway Age Contributing Editor and Patriot Rail Company Chief Policy Officer Don Itzkoff explores this year’s looming questions: Will Congress act on rail safety? Will STB oversight direction continue? Will substantial public investment in freight rail projects last?
  • Force Control: “Nearly 140 years after the first patent was issued, draft gears and cushioning devices remain as fundamental to railroading as steel wheels rolling on steel rails,” writes Railway Age Editor-in-Chief William C. Vantuono, who provides an update on draft systems research by the Association of American Railroads End-of-Car Energy Management Task Force and discusses the technology with Amsted Rail Vice President Engineering Jay Monaco.
  • TTC Operated by ENSCO: ENSCO’s Matthew Dick (Chief of Strategy & Development) and Przemyslaw Rakoczy (Senior Rail Research Engineer) provide an “up close” look at the Impact Wall.

Plus, Capitol Hill Contributing Editor Frank N. Wilner explores: “Can the Surface Transportation Board pivot to satisfy shippers?” Also, Financial Editor David Nahass examines the STB’s annual five-year rail industry productivity calculation and finds that pre-pandemic rail “is a thing of the past.” And American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association President Chuck Baker highlights how small roads are improving their environmental footprint.

These highlights and more can be accessed in Railway Age’s February 2024 digital edition:
