The November 2020 issue of Railway Age is now available digitally. In the fourth-annual “Women in Rail” issue, there are no fewer than four feature stories about, or written by, women who are not only making inroads, but also making a difference.

Spotlighted are railroaders like Katie Farmer, who becomes the first female chief executive of a Class I railroad, BNSF, on Jan. 1, 2021; Cindy Sanborn, Norfolk Southern’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer; the more than two-dozen Women in Rail Honorees and Honorable Mentions; and 2019 Honoree and Railinc CIO Joan Smemoe, who addresses how to meet the tech talent shortage.

These visionary women and more are “modeling the way” for their peers, their companies and the industry through collaboration and innovation.

In Farmer’s Q&A with Railway Age, discussing leading the Class I railroad and its workforce—“the hard-working men and women at BNSF”—she points out:

“When you combine people who enjoy what they do, like the environment they work in, and feel like they’re making a difference, then typically we find that those are the folks who want to make a career out of railroading.”

(Listen to the Rail Group On Air Podcast for the entire interview with Farmer.)

Other feature stories cover:

  • System safety as a value-added business driver.
  • How CN’s Autonomous Track Inspection Program (ATIP) uses railcars equipped with sensors and artificial intelligence to automatically scan and analyze tracks—in revenue service.
  • How greater component visibility supports safe, efficient operations.
  • How Metrolinx is driving Canada’s Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area transit—a tall order.
  • And maintenance strategies for keeping ballast intact.

These highlights and more can now be accessed in the November 2020 issue of Railway Age.
