Phoenix Valley Metro avoids LRT strike

Valley Metro light rail transit service will be available on New Year's Eve, following an interim agreement between local labor and the LRT contract operator.

The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1433 has threatened a walkoff prior to the New Year, but has agreed to submit its issues to binding arbitration. Alternate Concepts, Inc. (ACI), the contract operator, also has agreed to the move. Arbitration will begin early next year.

“I’m pleased that these discussions will continue because it’s critical that our light rail system keeps running and that service is provided across the region,” said Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, who also is chairman of the Valley Metro Rail Board. “I have spoken to both sides on this issue and I stand ready to work with them toward a long-term resolution.”

ATU workers have been without a contract since June 30, 2012.
