Next LRT proposal surfaces in Florida

Florida’s Pinellas County Project Advisory Committee on Monday formally adopted a proposal to build 24 miles of light rail transit linking St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Pinellas Park, and Gateway.

Notably absent in the proposal is any link to Tampa, located across Tampa Bay in Hillsborough County, which has failed to commit to LRT. The Pinellas County committee stopped short of calling for light rail as the preferred “regional connection across Tampa Bay,” though some council members pushed for such an identification.

Construction costs are estimated at $72 million per mile, including 16 stations in Pinellas County.
