FTA gives OK for Detroit M-1 project

The Federal Transit Administration has given its environmental approval for Detroit to construct an initial 3.3-mile streetcar line along Woodward Avenue from downtown Detroit to the New Center area.

FTA’s decision allows the M-1 Rail project to move toward design, right-of-way acquisition, and construction. Funding from influential city private donors, along with $25 million in federal funding, were announced last January.

In conjunction with the project, a new Regional Transit Authority was established, following the urging of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to enable a regional authority to coordinate public transportation efforts in the metropolitan area.
