Fort Lauderdale eyes stimulus money for LRT
Written by Douglas John Bowen Fort Lauderdale, Fla., officials, racing to comply with a September 15 deadline set by the U.S. Department of Transportation, are scheduled to vote Tuesday on a motion to seek federal stimulus funding for the city’s $124.3 million, 2.7-mile light rail project.
The city, along with its Downtown Development Authority, already had lined up pledges of financial support from state, county, city, and private-sector backers for “The Wave,” but DDA plans to ask for $75 million in federal matching funds.
DDA Director Chris Wren says he is “very confident” the project will be seen favorably.
The Wave would run along Andrews and Third Avenues downtown in Fort Lauderdale, from roughly Southeast 17th Street to the south, to Northeast 6th Street to the north.
