Blog report: Seattle streetcar ridership up

Written by Douglas John Bowen

Seattle Transit Blog reports ridership on the 1.3-mile Seattle South Lake Union Streetcar (SLUS) continues to grow, despite criticism that the initial segment is too short and was doomed to struggle. The blog says ridership so far this month (July 1 through 9) has topped 3,000 per weekday.

“As we have reported before, ridership on the SLU Streetcar has continued to grow since opening in December 2007 as new housing and employment continues to grow in the area. The average weekday ridership figure for July 2011 is based on one week of data, so the June data is better to focus on. Average weekday ridership for June 2011 grew by over 900 additional boardings over 2010, with a year over year increase of 200 weekday boardings the year before. From June 2009 to June 2011 average daily ridership grew by 64%,” the blog reports.

Blogger Adam Bejan Parast notes the total SLUS ridership in 2010 was 565,655, above the forecast level of 492,750. The Seattle Transit Blog can be accessed here. The line opened in December 2007
