UP says crews are replacing rails and nearly 50,000 railroad ties along the linea, and replacing rock ballast.
UP says the work is part of its long-term plan to improve it 760-mile southern route between El Paso, Tex., and Los Angeles. So far about 300 miles of the route has been double-tracked, with more such work expected. The route is used by Amtrak’s Sunset Limited.
