NYMTA goal: $3.8 billion in cost cuts by 2014

New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority on Friday released an agenda for 2011 that it said “continues a fundamental re-shaping of the MTAthat includes cost-cutting that will result in cumulative savings of $3.8 billion by 2014; and customer service improvements begun last year such as countdown clocks and implementation of systemic changes.”

jay-walder-nymta.jpgMTA Chairman Jay H. Walder (pictured at left) said that in pursuing the goals set in lastyear’s “Making Every Dollar Count” agenda, the agency has identified $525million in annual savings through an emergency overhaul of the way the MTAdoes business.

He added that “despite historic budget austerity, the agency delivered anumber of long-promised benefits to customers: activation of countdownclocks at more than 100 subway stations; bringing security cameras online;overhauling the MTA website; and demonstrating the promise of bus servicethrough a series of travel innovations that have significantly increase busspeeds.”
