Florida governor freezes SunRail funding
Written by William C. Vantuono, Editor-in-ChiefFlorida Gov. Rick Scott has upset the implementation schedule for central Florida’s planned SunRail regional passenger rail service, by freezing state funding intended for the project.
The move comes as the state’s new Office of Fiscal Accountability reviews all contracts worth more than $1 million.
SunRail’s estimated cost is $1.2 billion, with $615 million estimated for construction and $491 million for the state to purchase the right of way and tracks from CSX Transportation. Liability issues involving CSX, the state of Florida, and Amtrak were resolved last December.
