Canada feds seek to improve rail safety

Written by William C. Vantuono, Editor-in-Chief

Canada Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities Denis Lebel has re-introduced legislative amendments to improve railway safety nationwide.

The move follows Canada’s Economic Action Plan, under which the federal government committed C$44 million over a five-year period beginning in 2009, to enable the government to pursue a rail safety program based on detailed inspections, safety management system audits, and enforcement action in cases of non-compliance.

“Our government recognizes the importance of a safe and secure nationalrailway system to Canada’s economic well-being,” said Lebel. “This legislation improves rail safety and makes the Railway Safety Act consistent with acts governing other modes of transportation.”

The Railway Safety Act, enacted in 1989, gives Transport Canada the responsibility for overseeing railway safety in Canada.
