Investigators search MM&A Quebec office

Written by Douglas John Bowen

Quebec provincial police officials, investigating the fatal train incident in Lac-Mégantic, Que., July 6, arrived with a warrant at the Farnham, Que., offices of the Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway Thursday, July 23, 2013.

Police Sgt. Benoit Richard told CBC News that police had a warrant and would be seizing evidence.

The object of the police search was not disclosed, though officials did say it was a routine procedure. MM&A’s headquarters are located across the Canada-U.S. border in Hermon, Maine, while parent company Rail World, Inc. is based in Chicago.

MM&A’s 72-car consist, carrying crude oil, derailed and triggered an explosion in downtown Lac-Megantic. Canada’s Transport Safety Board has tallied the death toll at 47. Transport Canada last Tuesday revoked the use of one-person train crews, in response to the derailment.
