NGTC 2023 Featured Speaker Announcement Sofia Georgiadis

New York MTA Construction & Development – NYCT Vice President Vital Systems Sofia Georgiadis will speak about safety certification for CBTC systems at Railway Age’s 2023 Next-Gen Train Control Conference, presented jointly with Parsons Oct. 26-27 in Philadelphia.

Another term for “vital” is “safety-critical.” CBTC (communications-based train control) projects on complex existing rail networks like MTA New York City Transit—the world’s largest rapid transit system—require a comprehensive safety certification process. NYCT’s multi-year, multi-billion-dollar CBTC program involves numerous suppliers, consultants and contractors, all of which must cooperate and coordinate. This is a complex undertaking.

With degrees in electrical and computer engineering from Manhattan College and Pratt Institute of Technology, Georgiadis has spent the past 19 years at NYCT working with safety-critical technology. She has been responsible for safety certification of CBTC and solid state interlocking systems, a project manager on an independent safety assessor contract, established safety case guidelines for system development contractors, managed technical working groups, and was project administrator for the automatic train supervision system on NYCT’s A Division, among other duties. Prior to NYCT, Georgiadis spent nine years as Senior Software Test Engineer, Software Quality and Specifications Engineer at GEC-Marconi.
