AAR: North American Rail Volume Up Through Week 18

Through the first 18 weeks of 2024 (ending May 4), total North American carload and intermodal traffic rose 2.1% from the same point last year, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported May 8. The U.S., Canada and Mexico all experienced gains.

Twin Cities & Western Railroad, Railway Age’s 2008 Short Line of the Year, is receiving a $328,424 grant from the Minnesota Department of Transportation to extend the stub track over a recently acquired parcel and to create a full siding with connections to its main line, enabling greater access and track capacity to support a large transload operation. MnDOT Awards $9.6MM to 11 Rail Improvement Projects

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is distributing a total of $9.6 million in grants to 11 freight railroad improvement projects that it said will support economic development in different regions of the state.

RailState: CN Drives Canadian Intermodal Growth in April

A combined 96,719 containers moved eastbound out of the western Canada ports in April, up 6% from March 2024 and up 56.5% from April 2023, according to real-time network visibility provider RailState, which independently tracks all freight rail movements across Canada. April volumes are the highest has ever recorded by RailState, which was established in 2021.
