Public workshops to explore advancing The Tide

Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) will oversee three public workshops this month on the proposed extension of The Tide light rail transit to Naval Station Norfolk.

The hearings are part of a 15-month extension study, which commenced last April. HRT will use public input to identify potential issues not foreseen, and consider route and construction alternatives.

All three hearings will take place in Norfolk, occurring June 12, June 17 and June 19. They do not involve proposals for extending The Tide into neighboring Virginia Beach, a community which rejected LRT development in 1999 but has since begun reconsidering the mode.

The Tide, a 7.4-mile $318 million project, opened for revenue service Aug. 22, 2011, preceded by a three-day celebratory launch.
