Charlotte’s Lynx Blue Line light rail will get an $18 million upgrade, allowing station platforms to be extended to handle three-car trains, boosting system capacity.

Construction work is expected to commence in 2013 and be finished in 2015.

Federal Transit Administrator Peter Rogoff said the LRT line had proven its worth.“When you look at the economic growth that’s already transpired along the light rail, and the growth that’s going to come when we extend it up to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, this is the right investment to make with taxpayer dollars,” Rogoff said.

The LYNX line carries approximately 15,000 each weekday.
