Greenwich, Conn.-based Genesee & Wyoming's newly formed subsidiary, the Columbus & Chattahoochee Railroad, Inc. (CCR), has signed an agreement with Norfolk Southern to lease and operate a 26-mile segment of NS track in Alabama.

The line is comprised of two segments, running between milepost S 292.8 near Girard, Ala., adjacent to the Alabama-Georgia border, and milepost S 303.9 near Nuckols, Alabama, roughly 11.1 miles, and between milepost NIJ 0 near Nuckols, Ala., and milepost NU 14.4 near Mahrt, Ala., a distance of 14.4 miles. CCR will interchange with NS in Columbus, Ga., where GWI’s Georgia Southwestern Railroad also has operations, GWI said.

CCR expects to commence operations on the leased line in July, with 17 employees and six locomotives.

The short line is bracing to handle approximately 17,000 carloads per year, consisting primarily of coated paperboard-related traffic. CCR will be operated as part of GWI’s Southern Region.

CCR filed Verified Notice of Exemption April 27 with the Surface Transportation Board.
