CSX Update on Howells Yard Derailment

CSX late on Nov. 17 reported that recovery efforts were under way at its Howells Yard in Atlanta, Ga., following an early-morning collision of a Norfolk Southern (NS) train with a standing CSX train at an interchange point.

According to CSX, a total of eight cars derailed and one CSX locomotive was damaged. “There were no injuries and there is no risk to the public,” the Class I railroad said. “Approximately 485 gallons of diesel fuel was released from the fuel tank of the damaged locomotive. Some of the released fuel was consumed in the fire with the remainder spilled on the ground. Some of the diesel fuel that was released flowed from the derailment site into a nearby creek. The spilled fuel has been fully contained. CSX is working closely with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Georgia Environmental Protection Division to recover the fuel and mitigate any potential environmental impact.”

The fire was fully extinguished by mid-morning, and both the derailment and fire occurred with the CSX train, 11Alive in Atlanta reported.
