M-1 streetcar representatives on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015 said the public-private organization has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking an operator for Detroit's 3.3-mile initial streetcar line.

M-1 has scheduled a preproposal conference for March 13, with RFPs due for submission by April 16. Contract talks with a preferred bidder would occur in May, with a finalized contract sought by June.

Project backers currently seek to commence operations in December 2016.

“Passengers want a reliable, safe and clean experience and the operator of the line will be a catalyst for that,” M-1 Chief Operating Officer Paul Childs said in a statement Wednesday evening.

Alameda, Calif.-based Stacy and Witbeck, Inc. was named construction manager and general contractor for the 3.3-mile, $140 million project.
