Stephen C. Tobias resigned from the Board of Directors of Canadian Pacific Railway Limited and Canadian Pacific Railway Company for personal reasons on June 30, 2015, the company announced.

Tobias, Railway Age’s 2008 Railroader of the Year when he was with Norfolk Southern, joined the CP board in May 2012. “As Interim Chief Executive Officer, Tobias helped steer CP’s board and management transformation from May 17, 2012 until the appointment of E. Hunter Harrison on June 28, 2012,” CP said. “Tobias was also Chair of the Safety, Operations and Environment Committee from June 2012 until May 2015, and served on CP’s Management Resources and Compensation, Corporate Governance and Nominating Committees. At this time the board does not intend to fill the vacancy created by his departure.”

“Steve’s vast railroad knowledge, experience and integrity have been invaluable to the board over the past three years,” said CP Chairman of the Board Gary Colter. “The board wishes to thank him for his significant contribution to CP’s success and wishes him well in his future endeavours.”

Tobias served as a Vice President of Norfolk Southern Railway Company since May 30, 2000 and as Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer from July 1998 to March 31, 2009. He joined NS predecessor railroad Norfolk &Western Railway in 1969 as a Junior Engineer, and served as a Terminal Trainmaster, Superintendent, General Manager, Vice President of Transportation and Vice President of Strategic Planning at NS. In naming him its 2008 Railroader of the Year, Railway Age called Tobias “a true thoroughbred among operating officers.”
